The proper way to send a message when connecting to the SMTP server is to first send the HELO command with your computer's Internet domain name. This is normally done "behind the scenes" by your email program. If your computer is configured with an Internet domain that is not valid, the mail server may simply look at your IP address and let you go on or it may stop and ask you to try again with a valid domain name.
Eudora gets your domain name from the configuration of your Network Control Panels and has nothing beyond that to offer the SMTP server. Since many servers will let you continue with the invalid domain, Eudora by default tries to ignore the error message and goes on to the next step in sending your message. However zNET's servers check to ensure you have a valid domain name, as a security precaution. So, a "Polite people say Hello first" error means that our server doesn't allow the process to continue with an invalid domain.
If you receive this error when you go to send mail, this is what to do:
- Open the Control Panels, and double click on the Network icon.
- Click on the TCP/IP protocol and click on Properties.
- Go to the DNS Configuration tab.
- Make sure that DNS is enabled.
- Enter your host name in the host field (this can any name you pick for your computer).
- Enter your domain name in the domain field (znet.com). It is invalid to have spaces, commas, and other special characters in these fields.
- Save your changes when prompted, and you will now be able to send email OK.
